Layout first, metal second, glass third

Configuration is the plan view. Type is the metal. Door is the action. People mash those words together and then wonder why two quotes disagree. This page keeps the plan view still.

8.4.6 applies to shower doors, shower screens and bath enclosures in the listed rooms when the lowest sight line is less than 2.0 m. That sentence does not care if your Pinterest folder says “wet room”.

Alcove

Three walls, one opening. The simplest water story if the tray is honest. The screen can be framed, hybrid or frameless; hinged or sliding; or a fixed pane with a gap. Measure the opening at the tray, mid-height and head. Alcoves lie about their width.

These exist to steal less floor when a corner is tight. Every extra joint is an extra seal and an extra chance to be out of square. They are not “luxury” in a Code sense. They are more geometry.

Walk-in and doorless

A walk-in is a water design pretending to be a glass design. Tray fall, return length, shower rose direction and extraction do more than the pane. The pane still meets 8.4.6. A 900 mm return that looks dramatic in a photo can throw water at a timber door.

Bath screens

A screen on a bath is a bath enclosure under 8.4.6. Hinged bath screens need space over a slippery edge. People grab them. Specify the hinge and the grab as if someone will.

Accessibility is a configuration

A configuration that looks fine on a mood board can fail a person who uses a chair or a stick. We will not invent a circulation dimension. We will say: ask the occupant, then ask the practitioner, then read whatever access standard the job has actually called up. Do not hide that conversation inside a neo-angle.

Write the plan first. Then type. Then hardware. Then the table row.

Common mix-ups on shower configurations

• Calling a doorless screen “not a screen” to skip 8.4.6.
