Steel and aqua glass planes suggesting house windows at dusk

Topic hub

The window is often AS 2047. The frameless door is not.

NCC Volume One B1D4 draws a bright line between tested external-wall window assemblies and the glass jobs that must follow AS 1288. Homeowners mix those piles constantly.

Windows feel like one trade. The NCC treats them as two paper trails. If you remember nothing else, remember B1D4’s glazed-assemblies list. It is the cleanest public sentence for “why did the window company say AS 2047 and the frameless-door company say AS 1288?”

This hub is for houses and for the people who write notes on drawings. It is not a joinery catalogue.

What B1D4 sends to AS 2047

The following glazed assemblies in an external wall must comply with AS 2047:

  1. Windows excluding those listed in the AS 1288 set.
  2. Sliding and swinging glazed doors with a frame, including french and bi-fold doors with a frame.
  3. Adjustable louvres.
  4. Shopfronts.
  5. Window walls with one piece framing.

AS 2047 is a window assembly standard: frame, sash, hardware, water and the tested system. Housing Provisions 8.3 explanatory text says Part 8.3 is about selecting glass, not about installing those tested windows, because mullions, seals and water management belong to the assembly.

What B1D4 sends to AS 1288

All glazed assemblies not covered by the AS 2047 list, and the following, must comply with AS 1288:

  1. All glazed assemblies not in an external wall.
  2. Revolving doors.
  3. Fixed louvres.
  4. Skylights, roof lights and windows in other than the vertical plane.
  5. Sliding and swinging doors without a frame.
  6. Windows constructed on site and architectural one-off windows not design tested to AS 2047.
  7. Second-hand, re-used and recycled windows.
  8. Heritage windows.
  9. Glazing used in balustrades and sloping overhead glazing.

That is why a frameless internal door, a roof light, a one-off site-glazed opening and a glass balustrade share a standard even when they do not share a room.

AS 1288:2021, in Standards Australia’s public description, sets selection and installation procedures for glass subject to wind loading, human impact and special applications. It does not cover lift cars or furniture glass.

Human impact is a second layer

Even a tested AS 2047 window still meets people. Housing Provisions Part 8.4 covers doors, side panels, full-height panels, low perimeter glass, bathrooms, visibility and identification. 8.4.2 sends glass in doors to Grade A safety glazing to Table 8.4.2, with the 10 mm unframed-door rule for doors that are not shower or bath enclosures. 8.4.3 picks up side panels whose nearest vertical sight line is less than 300 mm from the doorway. 8.4.5 picks up framed perimeter glass whose lowest sight line is less than 500 mm from the floor.

If the pane can be mistaken for an opening, 8.4.4 and 8.4.7 decide whether you need Grade A glass and whether you need a marking band at least 20 mm high, with its upper edge not less than 700 mm and its lower edge not more than 1.2 m above the floor.

Wind, 1170 and 4055

Glass thickness for external panes is not a vibe. Housing Provisions 8.3 points at wind classification and, for some housing paths, AS 4055 pressures. NCC referenced documents list AS/NZS 1170.2:2021 for wind actions. We will not assign a wind class to your suburb. We will tell you to put the class or the 1170 pressures on the purchase order.

Second-hand and heritage sashes

B1D4 does not let a recycled sash skip AS 1288 just because it is charming. If the assembly is second-hand, re-used, recycled, heritage, or a one-off that was never tested to AS 2047, the glass selection is an AS 1288 job. That can still be a conservation outcome. It is not a free pass.

What to write on the request for quote

External framed window or door: ask for the AS 2047 system, the water rating, the glass make-up, and the 8.4 human-impact path. Frameless door, skylight, site-glazed pane: ask for the AS 1288 path and the actions used. The long guide walks the same list with more examples. Costs will mention WERS-type performance, low-e coatings and acoustic interlayers as factors — still without a price.

If a brochure says “complies” without naming 2047 or 1288, it is a brochure.

Field note on windows and doors (1)

Write AS 2047 or AS 1288 on the request for quote. Then write the 8.4 subclause.

Keep Housing Provisions 8.4 open if people can hit the glass. Keep Part 11.3 open if people can fall. Keep B1D4 open if you are arguing about AS 2047 versus AS 1288. Then write the clause on the request for quote and let a licensed practitioner correct you.

This site will not invent a price, a ranking, an operator or a statistic to decorate that loop. If you need a guest-post citation, cite the ABCB or Standards Australia page, not a memory of this paragraph. If you need a pane on Friday, you need a glazier, not another sentence from an editorial desk.

Unknown URLs on this domain are a real 404. Messy heritage paths 301 once. Clean paths, including this one, keep real writing so a backlink lands on a document instead of a parked page.

Questions homeowners ask

What visitors always ask

Each answer starts with the point, then the useful detail.

When does AS 2047 apply instead of AS 1288?

NCC Volume One B1D4 requires framed external-wall windows (with listed exclusions), framed sliding and swinging glazed doors, adjustable louvres, shopfronts and one-piece window walls to comply with AS 2047. Other listed assemblies must comply with AS 1288.

Do internal glass doors follow AS 2047?

No. B1D4 sends all glazed assemblies not in an external wall to AS 1288, along with frameless sliding and swinging doors, skylights, on-site windows and several other listed types.

When must a glass door be made visible?

Housing Provisions 8.4.7 require an opaque marking band if a door, side panel or panel that could be mistaken for an opening is not otherwise made apparent, unless a listed size or rail exception applies.
