Compare edges and tables, not adjectives
Framed, semi-frameless and frameless are structure words. The NCC split is framed Grade A versus exposed-edge toughened. This guide holds both vocabularies still.

Hold the Code split first
8.4.6: framed panels → Table 8.4.2. Any exposed edge → Table 8.4.6, toughened, minimum 6 mm. A semi-frameless door often has exposed edges even when the return is framed. Hatch the edges on a sketch.
Framed
Best at lying walls, rentals, and people who want a towel rail on metal. Leaks announce themselves at the bottom rail. See framed.
Semi-frameless

Frameless
Channels, clamps, hinges. The glass spans more. Hardware ratings matter more. The 10 mm unframed-door sentence in 8.4.2 is not the shower-door sentence. Do not mix them.
Sliding lives in all three
Sliding is an action. A framed slider and a frameless slider fail differently. The wall still has to be close to plumb.
How to choose without a ranking
Write the plan (configurations), the out-of-square, the door envelope, and the table row. If two people in the house have already picked a side, make them pick a clause instead.

Neither is better in the Code. Exposed edges follow Table 8.4.6. Framed panels follow Table 8.4.2. Choose from the opening and the water story.
Is frameless always thicker glass?
Often in practice, not as a published ranking on this site. Thickness is a design output for the span and hardware, sitting on top of the 6 mm floor for exposed-edge shower panels.
